Underwater Acoustic Pollution: Sources and Biological Impact

Humans perceived underwater noise in a limited way, which has led him to make a abuse use of some systems that perturb the underwater environment such as dredging, drilling, oil and gas production , shipping, active sonar , oceanographic research, etc. All these actions produce underwater noise pollution.

Noise pollution, as well as magnetic and electrical pollution, affects the flora and fauna of the seas and oceans from the moment that hinder the development of habitual behavior of living beings.

In this scenario SAES is developing the project USMA ( Underwater Signature Monitoring and Analysis Centre), which aims to develop technologies, equipment and establish rules to acoustic, magnetic, electrical and seismic unconventional contamination, and ensure compliance with the European marine Strategy framework Directive. Due to its characteristics, USMA could be developed within the framework European Horizon 2020 (H2020) program.

The following article, where the main sources of acoustic noise and its characteristics are presented, belongs to the set of investigations that SAES has done in this field.

The ROASW system developed by SAES sparked interest among participants UNVEX’14.

This Thursday ended the third conference on unmanned vehicles UNVEX’14. SAES was witness the favorable response that the solutions for new ASW missions offered by industry are receiving, in which the participation of unmanned vehicles has an increasing role.

SEDEF visita stand de SAESIn this context, the Remote Operation ASW (ROASW) system, developed by SAES, has been recognized as a system at the forefront of the market in Antisubmarine Warfare, since allow exchanging tactical and intelligence information between forces deployed in the ASW mission, collaborating in a Network Centric Warfare (NCW).

SAES has participated actively in UNVEX’14 with a stand and offering a conference about ROASW system, receiving from leading agents in the sector, the Government and the Armed Forces, highlighting the stay of Pedro Argüelles, Secretary of State for Defence, which underlined the growing role that Spanish companies have in the development of advanced technology in the industry praising creativity as a key to the competitiveness of companies.

SAES has established contacts with several important manufacturers of UAVs that have passed through the stand, offering cooperation to increase the value of their UAV models by adding the ROASW system.SAES ofreciendo conferencia en UNVEX'14.

The ROASW airborne segment (ROASW-AS) can be installed on unmanned or manned aerial vehicles being remotely operated from the ROASW surface segment (ROASW-SS), which is installed on surface platforms (either on a ship or a ground station).

As already mentioned, the ROASW system can work in a Network Centric Warfare (NCW) exchanging tactical and intelligence information between forces deployed in the ASW mission (Ship-To-Ship & Ship-To-Helo communication) and remote ground stations (Ship-To-Satellite communication), improving the control of the mission and increasing the detection range.

The fact of ROASW system enables small combat ships (500 to 2000 ton) to actively participate in ASW missions closest to cost produced a great impact on the audience.

UNDERWATER MULTI-INFLUENCE MEASUREMENTS AS A MEAN TO CHARACTERIZE THE OVERALL VESSEL SIGNATURE AND PROTECT THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

MIRSThe overall signature of a vessel comprises acoustic, magnetic, electric-field, pressure and seismic radiations. Over the past years international community’s efforts have mainly centred on reducing the acoustic influence with the dual aim of decreasing the vessel detectability and reducing the level of acoustic pollution generated in the marine environment. Nowadays it is becoming increasingly clear the necessity of acting not only on the acoustic radiation but against the overall set of the vessel’s radiations, both in the military and the civilian fields, based on aspects such as the stealthiness of the vessels, the security of harbour and critical infrastructures and the environmental protection. As a key element to achieve this goal, it is greatly important to have at our disposal highly modular and adaptable measurement systems covering the overall set of vessel’s radiations, with a high capacity of data transmission to base centres in order to have the capacity of taken measurements in all kind of marine environments.
