The «SAES Chair in Open Source and Critical real-time Applications» is an Research & Development initiative developed by the UMU (University of Murcia) and SAES (Sociedad Anónima de Electrónica Submarina), being funded by SAES. Those entities are collaborating for more than 10 years, since 2006 when they started to develop the together works. In 2009, the Chair was created and thus it strengthened the Research and Development activities.

It have been signed its fifth biennial renewal (for the period 2017-2019) in a public ceremony in the university of Murcia chaired by the Rector Dr. D. José Orihuela Calatayud and de General Director of .SAES, Sr. D. Antonio Cordero.

In-house technology

The SAES general director has highlighted the innovation as one of the foundation of the company that “invest in own Research and Development about the 10% of its budget”. Also, SAES collaborates with several Universities and participate in international and national R&D projects. In this context, the SAES Chair allows to SAES and the UMU to develop their knowledge in free software and real-time-critical software applications. This is a capital issue for a company, which possess a specialized software department, one of the base of the company. Thus, we can provide in-house technology without extern dependence” the SAES general director said.

The Chair, led by professors Dr. D. Diego Sevilla Ruiz and Dr. D. Gregorio Martínez Pérez, has improved the software & communication development process in areas such as the Big Data, databases NoSQL and the modeling of the automatic test software.

During the ceremony, the Rector has emphasized that on one side, this collaboration allows turning technological results into competitive advantages and productivity increase for the company and, on the other side, the university can better oriented the researches to the needs of the market and of the companies involved.

SAES and the University of Murcia renew a Chair for technology transfer

The “SAES Chair in Open Source and Critical real-time Applications”, started in 2009, is renews up to the 2017.

The «SAES Chair in Open Source and Critical real-time Applications» is an initiative of I + D + i developed by the UMU (University of Murcia) and funded by the company SAES (Sociedad Anónima de Electrónica Submarina). The collaboration started in 2006 and, after three years of intense work in which it became clear the benefits of technology transfer between university and industry, SAES and the UMU decided to provide it with a stable structure and thereby enhance the research and development carried out up to then. Thus, in 2009 the SAES Chair is created, being recently signed its fourth biennial renewal (for the period 2015-2017).

SAES is a Spanish company specializing in underwater acoustics and electronics that provides technology, systems and services in the fields of defense, security and environmental protection. The company, with over 25 years of experience, consists of researchers and highly qualified technical personnel in various fields such as electronics, acoustics, design and development software and hardware, methodologies, and operational requirements in the underwater environment.

In its commitment to technology transfer to and from the university, SAES has made possible the creation of a stable working group at the University of Murcia led by professors Diego Sevilla Ruiz and Gregorio Martínez Pérez of the School of Computing.

This working group has focused its efforts on improving software development processes and communications, allocating resources to investigate the development of human-machine interfaces industrial character, the implementation of communication scenario simulators, or the use of engineering software for model-driven automatic test generation as a fundamental part of the development process, among other issues. This collaboration allows that the technological capabilities and research results turn into competitive advantages such as increased business productivity and greater market orientation of scientific and technological knowledge developed at the university.

With this fourth renewal, the company SAES shows again its firm commitment to the University of Murcia, both in their efforts to transfer knowledge, as in the work of monitoring and research and technological innovation, and tasks that are performed within the company itself, being enhanced with the free software and critical applications in real time through the Chair SAES with the working group of the University of Murcia taking part in the same.
